How to Calculate Your Waste Diversion Rate (With Examples)

May 14, 2026 · 6 min read · waste

Your waste diversion rate is the single most important number in a zero waste audit. It determines whether you pass or fail certification — and it's surprisingly easy to calculate wrong.

The Basic Formula

Diversion Rate = (Total Waste − Landfill Waste) ÷ Total Waste × 100

Or equivalently:

Diversion Rate = Diverted Waste ÷ Total Waste × 100

Worked Example

A manufacturing facility generates the following waste in one year:

Waste StreamWeight (kg)Destination
Cardboard45,000Recycled
Mixed plastics12,000Recycled
Food waste18,000Composted
Metal scrap8,000Recycled
Wood pallets15,000Reused
General waste7,000Landfill
Hazardous waste2,000Treated/recovered

Calculation:

  • Total waste: 107,000 kg
  • Landfill waste: 7,000 kg
  • Diverted: 100,000 kg
  • Diversion rate: 100,000 ÷ 107,000 × 100 = 93.5%

This facility qualifies for UL 2799 Silver (90–94%).

Common Mistakes That Auditors Catch

1. Counting waste-to-energy as diversion (when it shouldn't be)

UL 2799 allows waste-to-energy as diversion, but TRUE does not count it toward the 90% threshold. Know which standard you're targeting before you calculate.

2. Missing waste streams

Auditors will check that you've accounted for ALL waste — including construction debris, one-off cleanouts, and hazardous waste. If your invoices show 50 tonnes but your facility clearly generates more, you'll be questioned.

3. Using volume instead of weight

Diversion rates must be calculated by weight (kg or tonnes), not volume. A full skip of cardboard weighs far less than a full skip of food waste. If your hauler invoices show cubic metres, you need density conversion factors.

4. No evidence for "recycled" claims

Saying "we recycle our cardboard" isn't enough. You need downstream evidence — a certificate of recycling, a receipt from the MRF, or at minimum an invoice showing the material was collected by a licensed recycler.

How to Improve Your Rate

If you're below 90%, focus on your largest landfill streams first:

  1. Audit your general waste bin — most facilities find 30–50% of general waste is recyclable material that was incorrectly sorted
  2. Add food waste composting — food waste is often the largest single landfill stream for offices and hospitality
  3. Negotiate with haulers — ask for material-specific collections (soft plastics, timber, e-waste)
  4. Upstream reduction — work with suppliers to reduce packaging at source

Automating the Calculation

Manually pulling weight data from hundreds of invoices is where most teams get stuck. ZeroDocPro extracts the data automatically — upload your hauler invoices and get a complete waste ledger with diversion rates calculated per stream and in total.

The output includes a full waste ledger with formulas, so your auditor can verify every number traces back to a source document.
